Silver Spring Transit Center Discussions

ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- The council made it very clear that they were hoping to hear directly from County Executive Ike Legitt.

But he was a no show.

So, instead, the council grilled his staff.

The big question is why did council members have to learn from the media that Metro had sent the county a letter saying it would no longer operate the transit center?

Montgomery County's executive branch say they're confident that Metro's commitment is binding, that they can't back out of the Silver Spring Transit Center.

"We feel that we have a firm relationship, legal arrangement with WMATA."

But Metro's standing firm.

In that letter to the county the transit agency said,"Deficiencies of the design and construction of the facility are of the magnitude and severity that even if repaired it would unnecessarily place an inordinate maintenance burden on WMATA."

$1200 Maltese Puppy Stolen From Rockville Pet Store

ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A puppy snatcher is on the loose.

Rockville City Police say a woman walked into a pet store and acted as if she wanted to buy the Maltese puppy but instead walked out of the store without paying for it.

The tiny pup was snatched from Just Puppies pet store in the Twinbrook Shopping Center, 2004 Viers Mill Rd., in Rockville, at 5:30 p.m. on April 12.

Police say it was caught on tape. They say the woman is seen holding the puppy in the playroom and when she sits down stuffs the Maltese in her purse and walks right out.

Mara Fain was helping the woman out that day.

"I was helping other customers and she just disappeared. I've never seen anything like it."

Employees never suspected the woman. But now they're worried about the health of the puppy that's about 2 months old and under 2 pounds.

Publisher, photographer probed over topless Kate photos

Publisher, photographer probed over topless Kate photos

PARIS (AP) - French prosecutors have placed the publisher and photographer of unauthorized topless snaps of Prince William's wife, Kate, under formal criminal investigation, they said Thursday.

Caroline Chassain, spokeswoman for the Nanterre prosecutor, said that Mondadori Magazines France and local photographer Valerie Suau were placed under investigation earlier this month over possible criminal exploitation of the images, which appeared in the French Closer magazine last September.

The photos showed the duchess of Cambridge relaxing at a private villa in Provence, in southern France, sometimes without her bikini top and, in one case, her suit bottom partially pulled down to apply sunscreen.

Chassain added that Suau's employer, local newspaper La Provence, was also placed under formal criminal investigation on Monday, but she did not elaborate.

The investigation will likely take months to complete.

Ride-On Bus Driver Cited After 11-Car Pile-Up Accident In Rockville

ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- The driver of the Ride-On Bus accident that caused a eleven-car pileup on Monday in Rockville has been cited.

Montgomery County Police say 58-year-old Walter Eugene Pardy was cited with failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision.

It happened on Nicholas Lane just before the Rockville Pike. The cause is still under investigation, but it appears to be one of two things.

Either the brakes on the bus failed or the bus driver wasn't paying attention. This was a red light. There were lots of cars stopped here at the intersection. And this Ride On Bus just plowed right thought them.

One witness said, "He just never stopped. No brake lights. No nothing. Just ran into all the cars."

Terri Ferrara was on her way to a job interview when her car was one of eleven taken out by this Ride-On Bus.

"He was moving fast...I am a little shaken. Kind of numb."

After Boston Marathon, Heightened Alert at Local Races

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The Boston Marathon will go on next year. In the meantime, local race officials are on heightened alert.

In light of the news, there will be a moment of silence before the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Miler Sunday morning. We're told the City of Alexandria is working to have increased police presence (uniformed and otherwise), including at the last leg of the race. In fact, the last mile is dedicated to Motor Officer Peter LaBoy, who was recently harmed in the line of duty in a separate incident. Trash cans will be sealed. There will also be restricted parking.
