Police still searching for mystery shooter in Rockville


ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A woman in Rockville, Md. is still recovering after a bizarre shooting Monday night that has left neighbors on edge.

The woman was hit by a stray bullet as she was driving through a suburban neighborhood in Rockville. Police are still searching for the shooter.

Neighbors reported hearing at least a half dozen shots near the Rockville Swim Club on Monday night. The woman was hit by one of the rounds as she was driving down Martin's Lane towards the Rockville Metro station. 

“It sounded like firecrackers, approximately six to eight,” said one neighbor who is too frightened to let us use her name.

Police at first did not find anything. But then a woman turned up at a fire station with a bullet hole in her driver's door and a gunshot or shrapnel wound to her legs.

Possible drive-by shooting in Rockville


ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- According to authorities, a person was injured in a possible drive-by shooting in Rockville, Md. on Monday night.

Montgomery County Police say the incident occurred in the area of Hungerford Drive and Beall Avenue.

The victim was transported to an area hospital and police are on the scene investigating the incident.

Montgomery Co. finds housing for every homeless veteran


ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County is among the first locales in the nation to meet the White House's challenge to find housing for every homeless veteran by the end of the year.  

The county identified a total of 58 homeless veteran men, woman and families in need of housing. Then, government and non-profit agencies banded together and found housing for every single one of them.  

Ismail Meredith served in the Army in Kuwait and Iraq. But nothing could have prepared him for the emotional and financial battles he’d fight at home.

"Your relationships start to fall apart," Meredith said. "[I was working] 40 to 50 hours a week. I pick up a second job serving the graveyard shift at IHOP."

But it wasn't enough. Meredith soon found himself homeless and was sleeping on park benches and in playgrounds. 

Large house fire in Rockville


ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A large house fire broke out in Rockville, Md. Saturday night.

According to the Montgomery County Fire Department, a two-story house on Barrington Fare in Rockville was the scene of the fire, which has since been contained. 

Authorities reported no injuries related to the fire but did rescue a dog at the scene.

Wootton students learn their college fate in person


ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- As high school seniors inch closer and closer to graduation day, checking their mailboxes for letters (any letters!) from the colleges they applied.

But for a group of seniors at Wootton High School, they won't have to wait for their mail carrier to learn if they got into Towson University.

The school decided to tell them in person.

An admissions counselor at Towson went to the high school to let about 50 students know they had all been accepted to the university.  

"My Mom went to Towson and she's really proud and excited," one student said. 

Some students chose Towson for a specific major...

"They have a pretty good forensics program, and I'm thinking about doing forensic chemistry," a student said. 

Bicyclist dies after struck by car in Rockville


ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A man riding a bike who was struck by a car in Rockville, Md. on Saturday night has died, . 

The man has been identified as Samuel Vigil, 37, of Rockville, Md. 

According to Montgomery County Police, the accident happened at the intersection of West Gude Drive and Southlawn Drive. Police said Vigil was facing a red signal in the crossing lanes and crossed against the pedestrian indicator. 

The driver of the striking car has been identified as Monica Min, 23, of Gaithersburg, Md. Police said she was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

Vigil was transported to an area hospital where he later died.

Montgomery Co. officer hit by car still in critical condition


ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- The Montgomery County police officer who was hit by a car following a traffic stop remains in critical condition as of Monday night.

Officer Noah Leotta had just finished conducting a traffic stop Thursday night in Rockville when he was hit by an allegedly drunk driver. 

Support has flooded in for Leotta, an Olney native and University of Maryland graduate, after the accident. Police say anyone wishing to send his thoughts and prayers to Leotta and his family can do so at fornoah@montgomerycountymd.gov.
