Motorcyclist tried to evade traffic stop before Md. crash


ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A motorcyclist is in critical condition after crashing his motorcycle while trying to evade a traffic stop Wednesday morning in Rockville, police said.

At around 7:47 a.m., a Montgomery County police officer tried to stop a red 2014 Yamaha driven by Ronnie King Jr., 27, on Connecticut Avenue near Aspen Hill Road. King however continued driving on Connecticut before making a right onto Aspen Hill Road.

The officer followed the motorcyclist and could not see them as they turned onto Aspen Hill. As they continued on Aspen Hill, they came upon an accident involving the motorcycle and three other vehicles at the intersection of Aspen Hill Road and Parkland Drive.

Montgomery Co. police investigating swastika graffiti


ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Two cases of swastikas being painted on objects in Montgomery County are being investigated as hate incidents, Montgomery County police said Monday.

On August 26 at around 6 a.m., a county police officer said they saw a large green-colored swastika painted on a county speed camera on Route 108 in Olney near Headwaters Drive. While checking the surrounding area, officers found a second speed camera painted with a swastika on Route 108 near Spartan Road.

That same morning just before 8 a.m., police say a resident in the area of Norbeck Road and Westbury Road in Rockville called police to report a green spray-painted swastika on the "Flower Valley" neighborhood entrance sign.  

Police believe the two incidents are related.

5 locations considered for Rockville Confederate statue


ROCKVILLE, Va. (WUSA9) -- Five different locations, all with a connection to the Civil War, are being considered as the future home for a Confederate statue in Rockville. 

The five locations are the Beall-Dawson Historical Park in Rockville, the Darnestown Square Heritage Park in Darnestown, the Calithea Farm Special Park in Potomac, the Jesup Blair Local Park in Silver Spring and Edgehill Farm in Gaithersburg. 

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett has been working to remove the statue from its current location outside the Rockville courthouse. The statue was boxed up after the words 'Black Lives Matter' were spray painted on it.

Vigil honors late Wootton High School principal


ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Hundreds of people packed the bleachers at Wootton High School's football field Friday night to honor the late high school principal many regarded as a caring and devoted leader.

Two Rockville parents charged in death of 10-week-old daughter


ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Two Rockville parents were charged Friday afternoon with multiple offenses, including child abuse and neglect, in connection to the death of their 10-week-old daughter.

According to Montgomery County police, Robert Alan Davidson and Lorena Thompson, both of the 200 block of East Argyle Street in Rockville, face charges in the homicide death of their daughter Aleah Thompson in June.

On June 23 at about 7:18 p.m., police say Davidson called 911 to report that Aleah Thompson was unresponsive and not breathing. She was flown to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C., where she succumbed to her injuries on June 26.

The Chief Medical Examiner in D.C. ruled Aleah Thompson's death a homicide caused by multiple blunt force injuries.

Wootton HS principal found dead


ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- The principal of Wootton High School was found dead in his home on Wednesday morning.

All Wednesday night, people visited a makeshift memorial on Dr. Michael Doran's parking spot at Wootton High School, where it seems like to the community, no one will ever be able to fill his spot. 

Montgomery County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers sent a letter to the schools staff to confirm the news about Dr. Doran. He called his death "shocking."

Rockville opens lot for meteor shower watchers


ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Looking for a place to watch the meteor shower Wednesday night? The Rockville Swim & Fitness Center parking lot near Welsh Park at 355 Martins Lane will be open to the public, say city officials.

Skywatchers can catch the Perseid meteor shower at its peak in the late-night Wednesday into pre-dawn hours of Thursday. See it in the Perseus constellation in the northeastern part of the sky.

No special equipment is needed to watch it. Get viewing tips here.

Perseid meteors are dust and ice particles from the Swift-Tuttle comet, according to NASA.
