Police in Third District Implement “Safe City” Program | Community Spirit
The following information was sent to us by Montgomery County Police:
The Montgomery County Police Department 3rd District and the Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce have joined together to implement the Target Corporation’s “Safe City” Crime Prevention Program in the Silver Spring business district.
Safe City, a Target Corporation initiative launched in 2003, encourages the sharing of information and the use of technology to unite law enforcement, local businesses and community organizations in a partnership to reduce crime and build safer communities. The Safe City program works toward these goals by emphasizing the sharing of information at meetings and by quicker means such as e-mail and real-time communication. The program also encourages the use of enhanced technology and the implementation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) equipment. Safe City encourages companies to make the best use of CCTV by placing cameras in the most effective positions to detect and deter crime.
Many of the activities promoted by Safe City are already being addressed informally in the Silver Spring business district. The Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce sponsors a monthly security meeting for its retail and corporate members. In turn, these businesses meet monthly with the police department to address issues of mutual concern. An e-mail list is also maintained so that people can quickly share information. The police department encourages businesses and residents to join Alert Montgomery, the Montgomery County Police Department (Official) Facebook page and Montgomery County Police on Twitter (@mcpnews). Crime prevention surveys for businesses have been available but are now being offered as an official part of this program.
Any business located within the Silver Spring central business district that would like to learn more or take part in this preventative program is asked to contact 3rd District Lieutenant Robert Carter at 301-565-7740.
