United By Blue and Hudson Trail Outfitters Hosts a Cleanup in Rockville

UBB does it again! On Saturday, July 16th, United By Blue hosted their 45th cleanup in Maryland! This time the event took place in Rockville, MD at Rock Creek Regional Park’s Lake Needwood. For this event, UBB partnered with Hudson Trail Outfitters, a regional leader in outdoor apparel and gear.

The cleanup was conducted from 10a.m. – 1p.m. UBB staff, Hudson Trail Outfitters and 40 volunteers got down and dirty to bag 380 pounds of debris from the banks of Lake Needwood. The amount is another big win for United By Blue’s trash ticker which has a total of 26,737 pounds since company creation in May 2010.

As usual there was an assortment of weird finds such as: a meat drawer (minus the rest of the fridge); four small metal trash cans; rubber cement; a steering wheel cover; sneakers; and an animal skull. Lake Needwood which was just dredged this summer is once again a good, clean, fun recreational area.

United By Blue is a Philadelphia based ocean protecting sustainable apparel company. UBB runs on the motto of, ‘For everyone product sold, UBB removes 1 pound of trash from the world’s oceans and waterways.’ The company sells original designed organic cotton t-shirts and tote bags placed in renewable banana fiber packaging. Each design represents an environmental or ocean issue that the world is facing today. With each purchase, a pound of trash then gets picked up at one of UBB’s weekly cleanups. The cleanups are company organized and staff and volunteers help out for a clean cause. So far United By Blue is on track to remove 100,000 pounds of trash by the end of 2011 and 1 million by the end of 2012.
