In the midst of the holiday shopping onslaught, it's good to remember the true meaning of the season. A friend of mine, Terence Tomlin, a chef and one-time front man of the phenomenal funk band The Mighty Heard, posted a story on Facebook that brought a tear to my eye. I think Terry's story deserves a bigger audience, so here it is, in his own words:

 

"Last Tuesday on my way to work I saw a lady struggling with her three kids. Looking at them reminded me of June 1980 when my mother took me, my brother and sister out of a abusive household leaving Bridgeport for California.

November 3, 2011-- Washington, DC.  Thursday night in Washington was all about giving back and giving thanks at the House of Sweden at the "Horton's Kids 2011 Give Thanks Give Back Fundraiser:  Cocktails & Crooners" in Georgetown.  It’s held each year to thank the many volunteer tutors, mentors, board members, and supporters who help enrich the lives of kids that reside in Ward 8 in Washington.

Horton’s Kids is a 501(c)3 mission is to educate and empower the children of Washington, DC’s Ward 8 by providing comprehensive, direct services which improve the quality of their daily lives and nurture their desire and ability to succeed. These services include tutoring and mentoring along with a host of other wrap around services benefiting children the Anacostia neighborhood.

Thursday, November 3, 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m.,Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will hold a special Parent Academy event to honor and assist military families. Members of the military and their families can receive information about the school system, ask questions and obtain important resources. 

 At the event, military families can:

- Meet school system staff, military service members, and community and government agency representatives 
- Receive resources and information
- Ask questions and meet other families in the community
