Pajama protesters want later school start times

ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A controversial about-face by Montgomery County Schools Superintendent Joshua Starr turned out protesters in pajamas Tuesday morning.

Starr has withdrawn his support for pushing back the morning bell at high schools in the county by one hour to 8:15 a.m, citing implementation costs. Starr says it would cost at least $21 million to adjust transportation and staff hours.

"It would not be financially responsible," Starr said.

In October, Starr recommended that MCPS consider shifting high school start times 50 minutes later, shifting middle school start times 10 minutes earlier, and extending the elementary school day by 30 minutes for the health and well-being of students.
