ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County has boxed up a Confederate statue in Rockville in an effort to protect it from additional vandalism.

Crews have built a wooden box around the 102-year-old bronze statue of a Confederate soldier after someone spray painted the words "Black Lives Matter" on it.

Montgomery County Executive Ike Legget has said he wants to take the statue down, but it can only be moved with permission from the Rockville Historic District Commission. They're expected to meet next month to decide what to do.
