ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Hundreds of people packed the bleachers at Wootton High School's football field Friday night to honor the late high school principal many regarded as a caring and devoted leader.

Wotton High School principal Dr. Michael Doran was found dead Wednesday morning inside his home. In the wake of the sudden tragedy, students at Wootton organized Friday's vigil to pay tribute to the man many saw as a crucial part of their high school experience.

The vigil featured stories from students, family members and fellow educators about the man Dr. Doran was.

"Just yesterday when I took my car in for repairs, the service advisor noticed I worked for MCPS when he saw my email address. And he stated that he had lost his favorite principal the day before. He said in years past he had not been performing well at Wootton and people had given up on him and he had given up on himself," Dr. Allen Goodwin, principal at Walt Whitman High School said. "But Dr. Doran spoke with him on several occasions and saying he was capable of doing better and should go to college, which he eventually did. He gave Dr. Doran credit for this accomplishment."

As a way to memorialize Dr. Doran, one Wootton booster hopes the community will push to get his name on the school's athletic field.

The cause of death for Dr. Doran is undetermined.
