COOL SCHOOLS: Rockville Students Get a Lesson In Underwater Robotics
News

ROCKVILLE, Md. (WUSA) -- They may not look like navy engineers but these 7th graders in Rockville Maryland have already been trained by them, in underwater robotics!

Parkland Middle School students Joyce Chung and Nihidi Matthew designed and built this remote sub called a Sea Perch. It's made out of pvc pipe, small electric motors, styro-foam ballasts.

The coolest thing for joyce? "how it was water proof and you could still make it move around with out getting the electricity all wet I thought that was really interesting"

That includes underwater design...the U.S. Naval Research Center sponsors the sea perch program and their engineers helped students with their design how cool is that!

Perhaps the best thing about the program, is their prospects for the future according to Mrs. Donna Blaney, Magnet Coordinator at the school.

"There is job waiting for them, because the work force that are the engineers now they are going to retire very soon so we really need them in the work force in a few years"
